Playing the Long Game: How God Moves Through Action Sports with Hannah Cornish
Hannah’s Journey of Faith
Hannah Cornish’s story begins with her career as a teacher in a comfortable and flexible job that many would consider a dream. However, despite her professional success, Hannah felt a stirring in her heart that something more was waiting for her.
“I woke up one morning and during my quiet time with God, I clearly felt Him put it on my heart to quit my job,” Hannah shared. Initially, she resisted this calling, questioning why she should leave a secure, fulfilling career. Yet, over time, through prayer and a series of small steps of obedience, Hannah began to follow God’s leading.
Her journey wasn’t without its challenges. As Hannah explains, stepping into ministry meant venturing into the unknown. It required her to trust God fully, especially in areas like financial provision, as her new role required her to raise her own support. “It was scary and intimidating, but God has been so faithful, meeting my needs in ways I couldn’t have imagined,” she said.
Transitioning into Ministry with FCA
Hannah’s calling led her to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), a ministry with a mission to bring every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. While FCA traditionally focused on team sports, the organization expanded its reach into action sports, recognizing the unique opportunities these communities present for spreading the gospel.
Now serving in FCA’s Action Sports Ministry, Hannah works in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where surfing and skateboarding are integral to the local culture. She uses these sports to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds, creating spaces for fellowship and sharing the gospel.
“Action sports are so individualistic,” Hannah explained. “They attract people who are often searching for something deeper. It’s a community of people chasing after the next big wave, the next thrill, but ultimately, it leaves them feeling empty if it’s not done for God’s glory.”
Hannah’s role involves building relationships, leading Bible studies, and even taking kids surfing. By meeting people where they are—whether on the beach, in the water, or at a coffee shop—she creates opportunities for organic, faith-centered conversations.
The Challenges and Joys of Action Sports Ministry
Hannah acknowledges that ministering in a non-traditional space like action sports comes with its challenges. The community can be territorial and resistant to change, but Hannah’s years of building relationships within the surfing world have helped her establish trust and credibility.
“Surfing used to be my god,” she admitted. “It’s where I found my value and purpose. But now, I use it as a tool to point people to the Creator of the waves, not just the waves themselves.”
Despite the challenges, Hannah finds immense joy in her work. She sees God’s hand in the beauty of creation, whether it’s a stunning double rainbow over the ocean or a pod of dolphins swimming nearby. These moments of awe provide powerful opportunities to connect people to God’s presence and love.
Lessons from Hannah’s Journey
Hannah’s story is a powerful reminder that saying “yes” to God’s call can lead to unexpected and transformative opportunities. Here are some key lessons from her journey:
1. Obedience Requires Trust: Even when the path is unclear, trusting God’s plan leads to growth and fulfillment.
2. Ministry Happens Everywhere: Whether on a surfboard or in a coffee shop, ministry can thrive in non-traditional spaces.
3. Relationships Are Key: Building authentic connections opens doors for sharing the gospel and fostering community.
4. God Provides: Stepping out in faith can be intimidating, but God’s faithfulness shines through in His provision.
Looking Ahead
As Hannah continues her work with FCA, she envisions bringing together the many existing surf ministries in the Outer Banks to create a unified community of faith. “There’s a huge surfing community and a strong faith community here,” she said. “We just need to take the next step to bring them together.”
With exciting plans for the spring and summer, including events and collaborations, Hannah is eager to see how God will move in her ministry and the lives of those she serves.
