Breaking Through the Fear: Your Fellowship Journey Starts Here

Today, we're diving into a topic that resonates with many of us: breaking through the fears that come with starting a fellowship. Whether you're stepping into leadership for the first time or simply considering hosting a small group, the fears can feel overwhelming—but they don’t have to hold you back. Let’s take this journey together, starting with a powerful reminder from scripture.

For God Has Not Given Us a Spirit of Fear

Let’s anchor ourselves in the truth of 2 Timothy 1:7:

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

This verse reminds us that fear isn’t from God. Instead, He equips us with power, love, and clarity of mind to face every challenge. Paul wrote these words to Timothy as a message of encouragement and empowerment, reminding him to rely on God’s strength, even in the face of adversity. It’s the perfect foundation for addressing the fears that often creep in when we think about leading or starting a fellowship.

Common Fears in Starting Fellowship

Let’s be honest—fear can feel paralyzing. I’ve been there, and I’m sure many of you have too. Here are some of the most common fears I’ve encountered, both personally and from others in the GatherHood community:

1. Fear of Not Being “Good Enough”

When I started GatherHood, I wrestled with doubts:

- Am I the right person for this?

- Do I know enough about the Bible to lead others toward Christ?

- What if I don’t fit the mold of the “perfect” host with the Pinterest-worthy home?

Here’s the truth I’ve learned: It’s not about me. I’m just a vessel that God is using in the moment. He’s the one who will guide others to the gospel—it’s His work, not mine. These doubts? They’re the enemy’s way of holding us back. Satan loves to manipulate our self-talk, planting seeds of inadequacy. But remember, God has called you for a reason. Trust in His plan.

2. Fear of Commitment

Starting a fellowship often feels like a big commitment. What if you can’t keep up? What if life gets too busy? The key here is to start small and let God guide your capacity.

3. Fear of Rejection

What if no one shows up? Or worse—what if they do, and it doesn’t go well? It’s a vulnerable feeling, but remember Joshua 1:9:

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

God promised Joshua that He would be with him as he led the Israelites into the Promised Land. That promise applies to us, too. You’re not doing this alone—God is with you every step of the way.

Practical Steps to Overcome Fear

Now that we’ve acknowledged the fears, let’s talk about practical steps to move past them. Here are some actionable ways to step into fellowship leadership with confidence:

1. Step Out in Faith

Fear will never completely disappear, but courage is stepping out despite the fear. Trust that God will handle the rest. You don’t have to have it all figured out—that’s His job.

2. Start Small

Don’t overwhelm yourself by overcommitting. Begin with one meeting a month or a small group of people. You can always expand as you grow more comfortable and find your rhythm.

3. Lean on Others

Use resources like the SisterHood Leadership Playbook or tap into the wisdom of someone you trust. You don’t have to carry the burden alone—there’s power in community.

4. Speak Your Fears Out Loud

One of the most powerful tools I’ve found is sharing my fears with someone I trust. Often, the negative thoughts I’m battling are just that—thoughts. When I voice them to a friend, their response is usually filled with encouragement:

- “Why do you feel that way? You’re one of the most organized people I know!”

- “You’ve always been my go-to for advice—you’re perfect for this!”

These conversations can help reframe your perspective and quiet the lies in your head.

5. Use Your Gifts

1 Peter 4:10 reminds us:

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms.”

God has equipped you with unique gifts. Pray for clarity, and ask Him to reveal how you can use those gifts in your fellowship. And if you’re unsure, don’t worry! Next month’s podcast will dive deeper into discovering your spiritual gifts.

Encouragement for the Journey

Let’s recap the scriptures we’ve leaned on today:

- 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us that God hasn’t given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind.

- Joshua 1:9 calls us to be strong and courageous because God is with us wherever we go.

- 1 Peter 4:10 encourages us to use our gifts to serve others faithfully.

Starting a fellowship may feel daunting, but you don’t have to do it alone. God is with you, guiding and empowering you every step of the way. Remember, we’re not called to be perfect—we’re called to be obedient. Take that first step, trust in His plan, and watch how He works through you.
